VISIT OLYMPIA BY BUS / TRAIN.
(The train information was revised July 15, 2010).

NB!!! Until the end of 2010 the rail section between Kiato and Patras is under reconstruction and passengers have to be transfered to a local bus. You get off / get on in Kiato, in Patras, and in Pyrgos with the trip taking over 6.30 hours.

A survey taken on people that visited Olympia alone by bus or train, showed that 5 out of 10 ask themselves whether the long trip to visit Olympia was worth while. For the Greeks ancient Olympia was a sacred place and this is how it must be seen, when you visit it today. Visitors confess that they leave from Olympia with the feeling that they missed something. In most of the buildings only the foundations have survived. If you don't have an idea of how the building looked like, what was the purpose of the building, and what was in it, then you will also feel the same. There are so many stories and myths about this "sacred" place and you need the help of somebody to tell you about them, about the history and purpose of the Pan-hellenic Games, ( since the Games at Olympia was just a quarter of them), etc.

I don't want to discourage you from visiting Olympia. On the contrary, we want to see it included in everybody's itinerary, and so, if you feel that you know the sanctuary and its purpose well enough, then we suggest that at least, you avoid frustration and stress, and have your transportation booked and secured. (When you try and get your ticket from Athens to Olympia, you will recall what I am saying).
Transport is the biggest challenge in Greece.
Organising the trip to Olympia is not as easy as you think. Your time there is very limited and you must plan ahead what to do, in order to see as much as possible. We know the express schedules, and the non-stop ones.
People leave from Olympia after they visit the museum and the site. Olympia has much more to show to you.
This is probably one of the reasons of the feeling that they missed something.

We organise daily: A trip from Athens to Olympia including pick up/drop off service (escential after a long day trip).
The price starts from 65.00 euro per person, and includes:
-
the transfer from your hotel in Athens to the terminal in Athens,
- the bus ticket from Athens to Pyrgos and to Olympia with return to Athens,
- the transfer from the terminal in Athens to your hotel in Athens, and
-
A presentation with photos and plans of the ancient site, pointing out in a simple way the history and use of every structure. It is the result of 6 years study, work and experience that will help you understand the layout of the site. An indispensable help, as in many buildings only the foundations survive today. Vandals, earthquakes and river floods have hardly left anything standing.

F.y.i. the entrance to the museum and the site at Olympia cost: 09.00 euros per adult or 05.00 euros for students. The under 18 years old are F.O.C.

However, if you have a day to spare, an overnight trip to Olympia is recommended. We can arrange your overnight stay at Olympia, in a budget hotel or a 4 star hotel with a swimming pool. (Worth the difference, especially during summer months).
